Frisian Drag

In the documentary series Frisian Drag there’s a story to be told. In a search to the drag scene in Friesland, we ask the question: where is the drag scene in Friesland and what makes it the way it is? We’ve already noticed that the drag scene in Friesland is much less prominent than in bigger cities such as Amsterdam. The contrast is remarkable, but how come so? We will explore the scene as a celebration of the artform and show you everything that comes along with it. From interviewing an actual Frisian drag artist, to experiencing our own first drag night. Frisian Drag isn’t only for the people inside the community, but for everyone who wants to broaden their horizon!

In this second episode of Frisian Drag we talk to Sipke-Jan Bousema, who is also known as the Frisian ‘Rainbow Warrior’. He stands up for the LGBTQ+ community in Friesland, the province where Sipke-Jan himself comes from. Partly thanks to him, Friesland became a rainbow province two years ago. We ask him about the importance of a rainbow province and how the drag scene is connected to this community.
We also talk with Wietze Meetsma, who is the main programmer of the biggest music venue in Leeuwarden: Neushoorn. We ask him about the programming of events and if he believes that a drag show could work in Friesland.
